There is joy and sadness, birth and bereavement; love found and the tragedy of love lost, but also much humour and laughter. Joan Moules writes so well about the tragedies and joys of ordinary people, and they're more moving because the characters have already come alive in the pages. It seems to me a very accurate picture of the war years as endured by the people at home. Their spirit shines through the tough times, and that's how it was. I think with this one and "Tin Hats and Gas Masks" she will have gathered many more loyal readers.
